Maths

In this section you can find out about how we teach Maths at Down Hall.

Maths is a key area for development at Down Hall Primary School. We are committed to developing a consistent approach across the school using White Rose Maths as our foundations for learning.

We also pursue opportunities within our school to professionally develop staff as we know that this is key for improving learning opportunities for all children.

Currently we are undertaking a whole school initiative whereby we have prioritised the teaching of times tables.

Mathematics is an essential part of a balanced curriculum that is both challenging and stimulating.  Our aim is for all learners to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and be able to reason mathematically and solve problems by the application of their mathematical understanding.  We need to ensure that children develop an enthusiastic and creative attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Daily maths lessons incorporate challenging mental maths activities, practical problem solving and consistent opportunities to secure the basic concepts of mathematics related to the four operations. We have a strong emphasis on mental maths in order for children to apply their knowledge and skills to a variety of challenging work. Standard written methods are taught progressively as laid out in our calculation policies. At different times children will work individually, in pairs, in ability groups and as a whole class.
